California voters decisively defended the environment by voting down a ballot measure that proposed suspending the Golden State's global warming law, the LA Times reports.
By the time supporters of Proposition 23 conceded defeat late Tuesday night, more than 59 percent of California voters had rejected suspending the law. The law was opposed by two Texas-based oil refiners as well as California business trade associations and anti-tax activists.
"While the global warming law may attract venture capital dollars to the state, they will not translate into the jobs or economic activity promised by Proposition 23’s opponents," Jack Stewart, president of the California Manufacturers and Technology Association, told the LA Times.
Opposition to the proposal was well organized: fundraisers pulled down in excess of $31 million, more than tripling the amount raised by supporters; star power canvassed the state for "no" votes as Edward James Olmos, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Redford and James Cameron echoed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's calls to turn it down; and 3,200 volunteers actively called and mailed voters.
"It is the largest public referendum in history on climate and clean energy policy," Fred Krupp, president of the New York-based Environmental Defense Fund, told the LA Times. "Almost 10 million Californians got a chance to vote and sent a clear message that they want a clean energy future."
