After announcing plans to outfit some of its stores in Massachusetts and New Jersey with solar panel systems, IKEA will also bring solar power to one of its newest stores in Colorado, the company said in a press release.
The furniture giant's new store in Centennial is the planned site for 2,212 solar panels; the store is scheduled to open in the fall of this year. The photovoltaic system will generate 498 kilowatts of power, and the installation is slated to begin sometime next month.
IKEA tapped California-based REC Solar to install the solar panel modules on its new 415,000-square-foot facility - the Swedish giant's 38th U.S. store. The solar panel system is not the only green technology the building will host: IKEA also installed a geothermal heating system to aid in heating and cooling the facility.
The photovoltaic system will encompass a 60,000-square-foot space and will generate 740,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
"We are excited about furthering our sustainability commitment with solar panels on the future Centennial store," IKEA U.S. real estate manager Doug Greenholz said in a statement.
