Colorado State University is discovering the many benefits that accrue from solar - and the school is so enthusiastic about clean power that it just completed its fourth Colorado solar installation.
CSU announced July 16 that a 132.5-kilowatt solar array at its Lake Street Parking Garage was up and running. Garages can be ideal for solar photovoltaic installations, as they provide open space and are typically located in urban areas that have high electricity demand.
The Lake Street solar array will contribute to the university's goal of reducing net energy use to zero. It's an ambitious goal, but renewable power could make CSU's net-zero-energy target possible.
After all, solar and wind technologies don't release any carbon or other pollutants into the atmosphere. Once they're up and running, renewable energy systems produce electricity year-round, with minimal maintenance. And they can help save money by reducing an organization's dependence on grid-sourced power.
If no net energy consumption is the goal, CSU will also have to improve efficiency. University energy engineer Carol Dollard called the latest solar project just "one of the many tools in our toolbox."
