The Crouse Organic Farm in Alamosa, Colorado has discovered the benefits of using solar power.
Not only can the farm's new 19.74-kilowatt solar installation reduce carbon emissions - a priority for a farm focused on minimizing its impact on the environment - but it will help make the farm independent from outside energy purchases, too.
"This project, along with our current transition into certified organic crops, will significantly reduce our carbon footprint," farm owner Ken Crouse said. "Furthermore," he added, "we believe this transition will ultimately provide Southern Colorado with a green model farm of the future."
Children will be able to visit the farm on school outings, Crouse noted, where they can learn about how solar power promotes sustainability.
Crouse installed his system with the help of a grant from the Colorado Government Energy Office's New Energy Economy Development grant program, which uses federal stimulus funds to subsidize renewable-energy projects in the state.
Colorado homeowners can also benefit from subsidies. Residents who aren't customers of Xcel Energy or Black Hills Energy - both of which provide their own incentives - can receive $1.50 per installed watt of solar, up to $3,000 for a solar hot water system or $9,000 for a photovoltaic system.
In Colorado, there's never been a better time to go solar - for organic farmers and homeowners alike.
