IKEA, seller of inexpensive furniture and a favorite of college students and the budget-minded, is increasing its supply of clean energy at its U.S. stores. The global home furnishings retailer recently announced plans to outfit the roofs of its two stores with photovoltaic systems.
This morning, IKEA released its plans to augment its solar power supply at its stores in Massachusetts and New Jersey. In Stoughton, Massachusetts, IKEA plans to install 2,800 panels that will generate 725,000 kilowatt hours of clean energy a year, while the Paramus, New Jersey store will be outfitted with 4,600 panels that will produce 1.35 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
IKEA credits its Swedish heritage for its focus on solar power and ambitious goals to reduce its carbon footprint. Mike Ward, IKEA U.S. president, affirmed that the solar power projects on the east coast will "complement our recently announced plans in California," and effectively illustrate the company's "commitment to sustainable building practices and reducing our carbon footprint."
Upon governmental approval, construction will begin at the two stores. The company anticipates the systems to be fully operational by spring of next year: When completed, the stores in Massachusetts and New Jersey will join IKEA stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Arizona that already have fully operational photovoltaic systems.
