Massachusetts Hosts Solar Entrepreneurial Summit

The Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center is playing host to the sixth annual Conference on Clean Energy in Boston on Wednesday and Thursday, an important gathering for solar installers, developers and researchers across the Northeast.

Despite its reputation for cloudy weather and snowy winters, Massachusetts has been one of the East Coast's solar leaders (though it lags behind New Jersey) thanks to generous state government aid, universities that act as solar research powerhouses and a generally green public ethos.

"We have everything from angel investors to venture capitalists and even some corporate investors that come in," said Abi Barrow, the director of the Technology Transfer Center. "The event has generated more than $260 million," in the form of investor funding, government grants and loans.

Most of the companies are local, but investors and innovators come from as far afield as Norway, Sweden and Israel. Solar is a big draw - the speaker's panel for solar industries actually ended up being oversubscribed, according to Barrow.

The MTTC event is located at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston's Back Bay.
