The New England Patriots play at Gillette Stadium just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Every game, nearly 70,000 people head to the stadium to tailgate and cheer on their beloved Pats. When they arrive, many may be surprised to see the extraordinary solar power and green initiatives the facility has taken to promote clean energy use.
As fans grille in the parking lot, employees hand out recycling bags. There are solar-powered compactors that collect the leftover cans and bottles and when a toilet is flushed, the water is recycled, used in the stadium's own waste-water treatment system. Moreover, 30 percent of all the energy used at Patriot Place, a shopping area, is generated from a photovoltaic system that adorns the center's roof.
The Kraft family, the team's owners, are fervently committed to solar power and clean technology because they "believe this is the way the world is going," says their business group's director of site development, Dan Krantz. In fact, the solar panels at the stadium are the largest collection of any professional sports complex in North America.
Mark McSherry, founder of Pro Green Sports, asserts that "the Patriots are among the best sports organizations when it comes to implementing sustainability initiatives." As a result of its sustainability measures, management at the stadium affirms that electricity and natural gas use have decreased by more than 25 percent since 2006.
