Arlington, Massachusetts Installs Solar Trash Cans

A town outside Boston is trying to go a little greener with the help of the sun. For Boston residents, the sight of BigBelly solar trash compactors is probably familiar - the bright green containers are a common sight around the Public Garden and Copley Square, among other locations.
Last week, the BigBelly compactors became the newest contribution to Arlington, Massachusetts' solar installations.
Arlington is benefiting from its designation, in May, as an official Massachusetts "Green Community." That makes the town eligible for $8.1 million in grants for renewable power and energy efficiency projects.
In order to qualify, Arlington had to adopt expedited permitting processes for renewable energy projects, commit to reducing energy use by 20 percent within five years and purchase only fuel-efficient vehicles for municipal use. The town also had to overhaul the building code for new construction.
The five new compactors deliver immediate benefits, as they are completely self-contained and, by crushing the trash they contain, have five times the capacity of regular receptacles. That cuts down on collection trips and reduces fuel usage by the sanitation department.
BigBelly is a local Massachusetts solar contractor, based in Needham, with customers in 40 states and 20 countries employing its distinctive green solar compactor installations.
