Quincy, Massachusetts-based Stop & Shop, one of the first true grocery superstores, announced Thursday that it has installed solar panels on eight of its locations in three different states. The arrays were designed and built by Alteris Renewables, the Northeast's leading solar installer. In total, the Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts solar installations will generate about 1.76 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to offset the carbon emissions of 153 average homes. "Businesses are waking up to the benefits of solar power. As one of the largest food retailers in the Northeast, we're proud to incorporate solar panels into our building, and we appreciate the expertise that Alteris has brought to this tri-state project," said Stop & Shop director of public affairs Faith Weiner. The solar arrays represent just one of a number of steps that the Quincy chain has taken towards improving the energy efficiency of its stores. The company is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 20 percent from 2008 to 2015. A full list of the stores now equipped with Alteris Renewables' solar arrays is available in Stop & Shop's press release.
