Massachusetts Solar Panel Company Appoints Physics Professor to Advisory Board

Solar panel manufacturers are racing to make their products more efficient and less expensive, and physics experts may be needed to help the firms optimize their panel designs.

One panel company, Magnolia Solar, announced Tuesday that it is appointing a professor of physics at prestigious Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to its technological advisory board. Magnolia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, will tap Professor Fred Schubert's expertise to develop its next-generation solar panels, Magnolia CEO Ashok K. Sood said.

"Professor Schubert's expertise will support development of very high efficiency solar cells by incorporating nanostructure based antireflective coatings and light-trapping techniques," Sood indicated.

Schubert, who is the Wellfleet Senior Constellation Professor of Physics at RPI, has 28 patents to his name as well as a variety of academic awards.

Most homeowners probably haven't heard of Magnolia, which makes solar panels for defense and commercial applications. But the technology in Magnolia's panels should make it to consumer solar products.

Already, solar installers take physics into account when designing customer arrays, measuring the angle of the sun to determine the optimal installation point. Physics - as Magnolia's appointment demonstrates - should play an even more important role in panel design in the future.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19799821-ADNFCR
