National Grid Switches On Massachusetts' Largest Solar Array

Electric utility National Grid turned on its 1-megawatt solar-power installation in Whitinsville, Massachusetts on Thursday.
It's the first of five planned solar projects for the utility.
The other four, located elsewhere in the state, are in varying stages of completion. For now, the Whitinsville installation is the state's largest - and the first step that Massachusetts is taking to a brighter green-energy future.
"The Green Communities Act [which was passed in 2008 and allows utilities to own renewable-energy projects of up to 50 megawatts] supports our efforts to encourage the use of clean technologies, and our administration applauds National Grid's leadership by installing the first utility-owned solar generation facility in the state," Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray said.
National Grid's Whitinsville array is composed of 4,683 individual panels. The electricity they generate is enough to power 200 homes each year. And, the utility said, the installation will cost the average residential customer just a penny per month over its 20-year useful life. It's a small price to pay for going renewable and reducing carbon emissions.
Indeed, National Grid reports that the panels will offset the emissions of 1.3 million pounds of carbon each year.
