The New England Patriots' uniforms may be blue, but their home just got a little bit greener. Kraft Group, which operates the Patriot Place mall next to Gillette Stadium, announced Monday the completion of its 525-kilowatt Foxborough, Massachusetts solar installation.
Providing 30 percent of the power drawn by the mall and its attached hall of fame, called The Hall, some of the 2,556 panels are visible from the stadium. The array was installed and built by Constellation Energy, a Baltimore, Maryland-based Fortune 500 energy company.
The panels themselves were made locally, by Marlborough, Massachusetts solar manufacturer Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ: ESLR).
The new solar installation will offset 8,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent of 1,600 cars taken off the roads. The complex also employs Big Belly Solar compactors, which use solar energy to improve trash storage and collection efficiency.
Robert Kraft, the chairman and chief executive officer of the Kraft Group, owns the stadium, the neighboring mall and the football team itself, in addition to the New England Revolution soccer team, which was founded by Kraft 15 years ago.
U.S. Congressman Barney Frank and Energy and Massachusetts Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles were in attendance at a celebratory event.
