The seaside town of Salisbury, Massachusetts is the site of two proposed solar panel installations that could reshape its role in generating power for the state, reports the Boston Globe.
The first proposal, put forward by Thompson Design Group, would convert 100 acres of woods into a "renewable energy park" generating 6 megawatts of electricity. It would combine solar photovoltaic panels with a few wind turbines, and it would be able to power another Thompson proposal - the renewal of the town's waterfront property with housing, hotels and infrastructure.
Jane Thompson, the group's principal designer, said that the combined projects form a "unified development program."
The second proposal, put forward by local businessman James Vaughn, would put a different 6-megawatt installation in a Salisbury industrial park which remains vacant after failing to attract tenants.
Both Thompson and Vaughn's proposals must overcome regulatory hurdles and concerns about financing - a tangled web of tax credits and regulations at the state and federal level make planning for the financial future of the solar installations unnecessarily complicated.
If they succeed, however, Salisbury could become the leader in solar development for Massachusetts.
