The town of Scituate, Massachusetts is considering plans to construct 15 acres of solar panels in a local landfill, providing as much as 30 percent of the town's power needs, reports the Boston Globe. At a Board of Selectmen meeting last week, the selectmen took up the possibility of leasing the land to a potential solar project.
Albert Bangert, the head of public works in Scituate, said that the solar facility would save between $150,000 and $250,000 over a 20-year period.
"The savings could then be used to buy land for recreational purposes that is much easier to develop," the Globe quoted Bangert as saying. Bangert also pointed out that as opposed to wind turbines, solar panels are relatively low-impact in both visual and audible terms.
Some proposals were put forward to turn the land into a park or sports fields, but because it is a recent landfill, the ground remains unstable and unsettled.
If the town decides to move forward with the project, it will first have to pass a vote on the lease and then select one of nine proposals, as well as a local Massachusetts solar installation company.
