Production costs continue to present an obstacle to the widespread adoption of solar panels - if it's too expensive to manufacture the modules, it will be hard to compete in the consumer market with oil and other fossil fuels until the price of those sources increases to more accurately reflect the externalities and environmental costs of production.
Fortunately, a number of companies are working to drive down the cost of manufacturing panels - firms like Spire Solar of Bedford, Massachusetts. At the 25th European PV Solar Energy Conference in Valencia, Spain, Spire showed off its latest turnkey solar module assembly line. Spire claims that it can reduce the capital expenditure of companies entering the solar photovoltaic market by as much as 30 percent.
'As the market leader in turnkey module lines, Spire provides customers with the greatest value by ensuring high throughput, high yield module production at the lowest cost of capital,' said Roger G. Little, the chairman and chief executive officer of Spire Corporation.
The cost of photovoltaic solar systems has dropped precipitously in the last fifteen years, falling from around $7 per watt to less than $1 per watt in some cases. Thirty years ago, the price was over $20 per watt.
