Companies Use Federal Grants to Shorten Solar Payback Period

Solar-energy projects are made more viable by the provision of federal stimulus grants, as a business partnership in the Northeast illustrates.

New York-based MSGI - an engineering infrastructure provider - and C Solar, a Connecticut-based solar installer, are collaborating to build five solar farms in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. They are targeting academic campuses with their solar projects - and are hoping to act soon to take advantage of temporary federal grants.

"We have been working on the development and implementation of multiple solar facilities before the federal stimulus grants expire," MSGI CEO Jeremy Barbera said.

Specifically, MSGI and C Solar are applying for solar-farm development grants, available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grants, the companies say, can help solar facilities break even more quickly.

While it's unlikely that a homeowner in New York, Massachusetts of Connecticut will apply for a solar-farm grant, property owners should look into available state and federal incentives. The IRS, for example, provides a 30 percent tax credit for clean-energy systems; states have their own incentive programs, as well.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19782305-ADNFCR
