A Massachusetts company has embarked on developing innovative solar panels that challenge the dominance low-cost producers in China and abroad have in the market, the Boston Globe reports.
Stellaris of North Billerica, a suburb Northwest of Boston, is working on new solar panel designs by developing panels that require less photovoltaic material. A specially designed plastic case directs sunlight to the material, using less photovoltaic material, which also costs less thus saving money that otherwise would be earmarked for expenses.
"Our bet is on technology innovation,"’ Stellaris chief executive Jim Paull told the newspaper. "That's how you combat a commodity like Chinese-made panels."
The Asian nation manufactures cheap panels based on older technology. A research firm released a report in October stating eight of the world's 15 most successful producers of solar panels are based in China. The nation saw the majority of its solar growth in 2008 and 2009.
"The Chinese companies have taken commodity manufacturing processes and squeezed the heck out of the cost," a venture capitalist who invests in several solar companies told the newspaper. "It has made them extremely competitive."
