American University Purchases 100 Percent Green Power

The American University in Washington, D.C. is one of the largest green-power buyers in the country, an announcement says.

The school announced Tuesday that it had bought renewable energy credits (RECs) for 100 percent of its annual electricity consumption, or 53 million kilowatt-hours. The move ensures that an amount of renewable energy equal to the university's electricity use is fed into the grid.

For American, the decision to buy green power isn't just an ethical one - it's a political one, too. "With our location in the nation's capital, we feel a particular responsibility to lead climate change mitigation strategies," AU sustainability director Chris O'Brien said.

The school's green-energy purchase makes it the second-largest educational purchaser of renewable power. Only the University of California-Santa Cruz buys more green power, the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership says.

And it's the second Washington-area school to consume renewable energy. Last year, Catholic University became the first with a spate of solar-panel installations.

For universities concerned about energy costs, solar and other alternative-energy technologies are a smart option. It's likely that more schools will install solar panels or buy RECs.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19771673-ADNFCR
