Federal Correctional Facility in New Jersey Gets Solar Power

A federal prison might seem like an incongruous location for an energy-efficient solar power system, but the federal government has its own mandates to reduce its energy usage and improve renewable energy utilization.
With this in mind, the federal correctional institution in Fairton, New Jersey - as well as another facility in Petersburg, Virginia - are installing solar photovoltaic arrays alongside a host of other efficiency improvements.
Constellation Energy of Baltimore, Maryland is putting in efficient lighting, smart energy controls, physical plant improvements and a roof-mounted solar installation which the company estimates will save FCI Fairton over $800,000 per year in operating costs.
"Constellation Energy can apply the resources and expertise of a leading, national energy services company to develop comprehensive energy programs that address and exceed all federal mandates for conservation and deployment of renewables," said Constellation's senior vice president of green initiatives, Michael D. Smith.
Beyond its prisons, New Jersey's solar installations generate more renewable energy from the sun than any other state except for California, thanks in large part to its Solar Renewable Energy Credit system. SRECs allow companies to trade solar power in much the same way that the proposed cap-and-trade system would allow utilities and industries to trade pollution credits.
