The public school system in Vineland, New Jersey is determining if solar power would help cut its $4 million annual energy bill, the Daily Journal newspaper reports.
The paper, which covers the greater Vineland area, says the school system has hired a Pennsylvania energy consulting firm to draft and review proposals for solar installations. Town education officials will accept bids for solar arrays on all 18 of Vineland's public school buildings - but the installations won't go on the buildings themselves, due to concerns about some facilities' advanced age.
Rather, the town will seek bids for ground-mounted solar installations.
While Vineland's school system has been considering solar power for the past year and a half, the district decided to move now to take advantage of available rebates and incentives, the Daily Journal notes.
As a nonprofit organization, the town's school system isn't eligible for solar tax credits. By partnering with a private installer or buying solar power through a power purchase agreement, it can leverage rebates that it wouldn't ordinarily be able to access.
It's a smart decision - one that could end up saving a significant amount of money.
