New York Private School Adopts Solar, Anticipates Lower Energy Bills

The Riverdale Country School, a private, pre-k-through-12 school in New York City, is getting ready to go solar.

Workers began installing solar panels on the roof of the Jeslo Harris Theater at the school's Hill Campus in early August. Once construction is finished and the solar array can be switched on, RCS anticipates that it will save $5,600 in energy costs in the project's first year of operation.

In subsequent years, the savings will be even greater if grid-sourced energy gets more expensive.

According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, RCS' solar array will be one of the largest in the Bronx. It will be able to generate 35,000 kilowatts of clean power each year.

RCS is going solar for no cost: Its $198,000 New York City solar installation was a gift from the class of 2010 and their parents. NYSERDA chipped in, too, to the tune of $43,750.

In the long term, RCS sustainability director David Patnaude said to the Riverdale Press, the school may attempt to go carbon-neutral. The next step may be to install solar-thermal systems on the gym and cafeteria, he indicated.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19933075-ADNFCR
