Bill Owens, the U.S. representative from New York's 23rd District, paid a visit last week to Energy Masters, a solar panel company with operations in Canastota, New York.
Energy Masters is one of only a handful of New York solar panel companies - but the ranks of New York-based solar firms could swell in the coming years. Solar production can create jobs and expand local tax bases, and solar installations can help households and businesses lower their carbon emissions.
"I think that green energy is where we need to go," the Oneida Daily Dispatch quoted Owens as saying.
During the congressman's visit, Energy Masters demonstrated its foldable solar-panel technology. Several of the company's panels can be folded into a briefcase-sized package - an ideal solution for the military. Some of Energy Masters' equipment was shipped to Haiti in the wake of its earthquake, as well.
As the Daily Dispatch notes, solar panels can work well in New York. While the state lacks the abundant sunshine of California or Arizona, cold weather can actually help panels perform better - making New York solar installations a smart investment.
