Going Solar Pays Off for Pennsylvania Homeowners and Businesses

More Pennsylvania solar installations are springing up as homeowners and businesses learn about the cost savings that solar can provide.

Waynesboro, Pennsylvania's Record-Herald reported August 24 on one business that adopted solar power and expects to see immediate energy savings. The Cermak Professional Building paid to have 96 solar panels installed on its roof - and building co-owner Mike Cermak, Jr. expects his electricity bills to be halved.

"Within a month, we will get rebates from the state and based upon our calculations, the system should pay for itself in four or five years," he said to the newspaper.

Pennsylvania's Sunshine Solar Rebate Program is the rebate initiative to which Cermak was referring. It provides rebates for 35 percent of a solar photovoltaic project's costs, up to $12,500 for a residential installation and $77,500 for a commercial one. Solar-thermal installations are also eligible for a subsidy, helping make it more affordable for households and businesses to produce heat or hot water from the sun.

The lead installer of Astrum Solar, the company responsible for the Cermaks' project, said to the Record-Herald that the Pennsylvania solar market is heating up. "We opened an office in Pennsylvania in February and I've done about 50 installs across the state since then," Brett Stone noted.ADNFCR-3324-ID-19933071-ADNFCR
