Pennsylvania Government Funds Solar Installations Statewide

The Pennsylvania solar industry is getting a major boost thanks to more than $20 million in state and federal funding.

Pennsylvania's governor, Ed Rendell, announced September 1 that the state Energy Development Authority was providing $20.5 million in grants for solar and other renewable projects around Pennsylvania. Those funds will be combined with more than $200 million in private investment, helping spur renewable-energy installations and reduce emissions.

Funding programs like the one announced this week, Rendell said, 'benefit Pennsylvania's consumers … while stimulating the economy by creating manufacturing and employment opportunities, attracting private investments and making our environment cleaner.'

The projects being funded range from a 330-kilowatt solar energy generator at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia to a 2-megawatt solar power system at UGI Development Co. in Bucks County. Also in the cards, the governor's office said, is a 2.2-megawatt ground-mounted solar installation at elementary schools in Northampton County.

Other clean-power projects are receiving funding, too. One is a geothermal cooling system at a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center facility, and another is a combustion turbine with a waste-heat recovery system at Albright College.

Pennsylvania is already one of the nation's most renewable-energy-friendly states, and the new investments will help make clean power even more prevalent.
