Earlier this month, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) release its 2010 assessment of the California Solar Initiative (CSI), a multi-year effort to increase the number of solar installations statewide. Among the report’s most interesting bits? The results from a phone survey CPUC conducted in 2009.

California Solar Initiative customer satisfaction

Admittedly, this isn’t the most exhilarating chart. And details on the number of people interview are notably absent. But look at how satisfied customers reported being with the performance of their new solar photovoltaic systems — nine of out ten! These numbers are consistent with what we typically hear from homeowners who have recently installed a solar panel system: most report their new systems meet or exceed the production projections outlined in the initial project proposal.

Here it is straight from the horse’s mouth:

A phone survey conducted as part of the 2009 Impact Evaluation provided an opportunity to ask participants about their level of satisfaction with the program, with their solar contractors and with the size and performance of their solar PV system. Overall for both residential and nonresidential participants there is a high degree of satisfaction across these attributes.

Beyond system performance, the numbers indicate there may be some room for improvement when it comes to the administration of the program and corresponding solar incentives. Commercial solar customers, in particular, reported being less satisfied with the CSI program itself.
