For the London Olympics in 2012, the planners are trying to go green. One of their newest ideas, in addition to dissuading attendees from driving to the event, is to make the fuel source of the Olympic flame something more environmentally friendly than the usual paraffin.
It’s a nice gesture, but of course it won’t make a real difference to the carbon state of the world. More important is the question: Can the Olympics ever be carbon neutral? With millions of people flying internationally, let alone the carbon cost of construction for the games, how can the event possibly be made sustainable?
We’re glad that the London committee is thinking along sustainable lines–in stark contrast to the problems with the upcoming Beijing games–but we feel there’s a basic problem here that no amount of patching can address.
