See: Mass Energy
In Boston last night, the Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance celebrated 25 years of bringing affordable energy solutions to Massachusetts. No, there was no dancing, but there was a pretty cut-throat silent auction (getsolar is trying not to be bitter about losing the guided tour of Deer Island).
Mass Energy is the kind of coalition that every state needs, let alone the federal government: “Mass Energy is a non-profit organization that both advocates and acts in the marketplace on behalf of consumers and the environment. We have offered discount heating oil since 1982 and now serve 10,000 households. We also offer green electricity options and solar energy services.” Communities involved in Mass Energy’s energy programs, members of the organization (including national nonprofit Clean Water Fund, local wind turbine developers, and solar advocates), and well-wishers were thoroughly represented.
Mass Energy’s commitment to underserved populations came to the forefront during speeches by Executive Director Larry Chretien, Board of Directors President Stephen Bird, and keynote speaker Ann Berwick, the Under Secretary of Energy for Massachusetts–a cabinet level position for the first time since 1991, thanks to new governor Deval Patrick.
The speakers were excellent, the decor thoughtful (tiny bottles of biodiesel on every table? Nice touch, Mass Energy!). But really, it was the sheer presence of so many people that lent a feeling of optimism to the gathering. It’s another sign that after so many years of what has no doubt seemed at times fruitless toiling, organizations like Mass Energy are fnally getting through to the rest of us
