Officially known as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, the “Solar India” plan adopts a three-phased approach with a preliminary goal of installing 200 MW of solar energy capacity by 2012. By the year 2022, Solar India hopes to have 20,000 MW of solar thermal and photovoltaic energy up and running. According to the plan, The ambitious target for 2022 of 20,000 MW or more, will be dependent on the ‘learning’ of the first two phases, which if successful, could lead to conditions of grid-competitive solar power. We are involved in this effort of India and hence have the 'kitchen view' of what's cooking. India could be the next GW scale Solar manufacturer as well as the multi GW Solar market. Indian and global Solar companies have already started uttering billion dollar investments. The bell-weather Indian states like AP and Gujarat have proactively allocated Solar Power generation capacities or the land parcels to pull in the investments in solar Power Generation. In the state of Tamilnadu GMR group of India has launched a large Special Economic Zone dedicated to Solar Manufacturing and Master planned by CH2M Hill.
