GRID Alternatives, the California organization that installs solar energy systems atop affordable housing complexes primarily in northern California, is partnering with Sunvalley Solar to extend its program to the state’s southern half.

GRID has made recent moves into southern California. On June 12, the group held its first Greater Los Angeles Solarathon, during which GRID installed eight solar electric systems for low-income homeowners in Ventura County. The event also signaled the beginning of GRID’s partnership with Sunvalley Solar, a California solar installer. Sunvalley was a sponsor of the L.A. Solarathon and provided the equipment needed to complete the Ventura County installations.

In recent years, GRID has done the bulk of its work through the Single-Family Affordable Solar Homes (SASH) program, the country’s first solar incentive program aimed at bringing solar energy savings to low-income families. It is a part of the California Solar Initiative and  is funded by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) through taxpayer money.
