ProLogis, an owner and operator of warehouses, yesterday announced that a second rooftop solar installation project will be added to five of its facilities in Southern California. Together with the company’s first — a 2-megawatt (MW) solar panel system already installed at a facility in Fontana, California — the newly announced 11.1-MW project will bring the company’s solar tally to some 13.5 MWs installed in the U.S., and 26.6 MWs installed globally.
The California solar installations are part of a larger plan, spearheaded by Southern California Edison, that aims to make use of roof space that would otherwise be of little utility. Under an previously signed agreement with SCE, ProLogis is committed to hosting 100 MWs of rooftop solar panels across the state. The systems — which together are expected to cover some 2.5 million square feet of ProLogis roof space – will be owned and maintained by SCE. In return for providing the space for the solar panels, ProLogis will collect rental fees.
Speaking about the arrangement, Drew Torbin, VP of renewable energy for ProLogis, had the following to say: ”Our partnership with SCE works well for both parties – we have flat, available roof space and local construction management expertise in place to support the growth of SCE’s renewable energy program.”
While the agreement’s target — 100 MWs on 2.5 million square feet of roof space — is substantial, the potential could be much larger still: ProLogis owns approximately 45 million square feet of roof space across SCE service territory.
