Thanks to Austin-based Green Mountain Energy, the office building of Girls Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) is home to a brand new 10-kW solar array. On September 13th, representatives from both organizations — including Green Mountain’s mascot, “Super Earth” — were on hand to “flip the ceremonial switch.” The solar installation incorporates 56 solar panels and is expected to save the GSSJC about $300,000 over the course of its lifetime. Here’s a snippet from the press release:
“Green Mountain Energy Company is proud to partner with the Girl Scouts, an organization that not only represents leadership and character, but is also deeply committed to the environment and the benefits of renewable energy,” said Paul Markovich, senior vice president of Residential Services, Green Mountain Energy Company. “Donating solar systems like this helps Green Mountain give back to the Houston community where our customers and employees live, work, play, and attend school, while supporting our mission to change the way power is made.”
The project was financed via Green Mountain’s Big Texas Sun Club, a program that enables Green Mountain customers in Texas to support solar energy installations by paying an additional $5 on their monthly electric bill. The Girl Scout project is the program’s 19th installation in Texas, and the sixth in Houston.

I gotta say: I love the mascot’s costume. And that picture is pretty darn cute. But the mascot’s name — “Super Earth” — is not exactly what you’d call imaginative. Any suggestions to help Green Mountain come up with a more compelling name?
