If the upfront costs of solar are an issue, we would also urge homeowners to talk to their potential solar vendors about commercial lease programs. Some solar installers, such as Solar City, have set up commercial leases, allowing them to take advantage of better tax breaks and passing those onto the residential customer. We recently installed a PV system on our home for a total upfront cost of $29 and an initial lease payment rate of $29 per month, which in theory should offset our monthy electrical bill, resulting in net savings of $30 per month. Our system has been online one month and our PG&E bill dropped from $90 last October to $3.98! With the lease payment, that is still almost a $60 savings in just one month. Full details of our lease and performance of our system are available on our website/blog at http://www.beausoleil-architects.com.
