Southern California Edison (SCE), one of California’s three major utilities, has been recognized by multiple environmental organizations for its work in the realm of energy efficiency. One of those organizations is the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). So if you don’t want to listen to GetSolar when it comes to energy saving tips, listen to THEM!

SCE is encouraging folks not to run to the air conditioning during this most recent heat wave. WAIT!… Don’t write this idea off just yet. I know it’s hot and I know the ground is burning holes in your sandals. But SCE has some easy tips on how to keep cool without blasting your AC and, meanwhile, shooting your utility bill through the roof.

Cover your windows with drapes and keep the AC at a steady 78 degrees. Close the doors to places in the house that are not in use — this way, the cool air travels to the rooms you are using. Use a fan and opt for the outdoor grill instead of the stove. All of these suggestions are well within reason and can make a big difference when it comes to keeping cool and saving money.

SCE also encourages you to take an energy efficiency survey to identify key areas where you can reduce your energy demand the most. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for SCE’s rebates and incentives for energy-saving appliances. Finally, switch to  compact fluorescent lights or LEDs to save even more on your monthly bill.

Once you’ve reduced your consumption, and boosted the efficiency of your home, then is the best time to consider installing a renewable energy system, like solar panels, on your home.
