SunPower Corporation, a leading manufacturer of solar panels, will soon improve Arizona’s already impressive solar power portfolio. The company has started construction of a 3.5-megawatt (MW) solar energy system atop the Macy’s fulfillment center in Goodyear, Arizona. When completed, it will be the largest single-rooftop solar energy system in the U.S., according to a company statement.
The system is made up of SunPower’s E19 panels, which, according to SunPower, are the most powerful panels on the market today. They will be mounted on the SunPower (R) Solar Roof Tile system, the company’s new roofing solution that promises to roughly double the amount of energy generated per square meter compared to panels that are mounted flush with flat rooftops. The roofing system is tilted at a five degree angle and is the first all-in-one photovoltaic (PV) rooftop product that incorporates the solar panel, frame and mounting system into a single unit.
Arizona Public Service (APS) has already agreed to purchase the renewable energy credits (REC) from the new Goodyear solar power system, which is expected to account for 70 percent of the energy consumed by the 600,000 square-foot facility and offset 3,500 tons of carbon dioxide emission annually.
This latest installation builds upon a relationship between Macy’s and SunPower that began in 2007. Since then, SunPower has installed more than 12 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity at over 30 Macy’s buildings throughout the United States.
