More about Solar Energy in California

California leads the country in solar energy. As of 2008, California accounted for over 65% of all the grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the U.S., with 530 megawatts (mW) installed statewide. Compared to other states' figures, this number is huge -- and will continue to grow in coming years. This means more solar panels installed by homeowners and businesses. It also means more solar thermal (hot water) systems and, increasingly, more commercial-scale solar energy plants, some of which use concentrating solar power. (See "Types of Solar" for more info.) Under the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger, the state has pushed to get utilities to commit to producing 20% of their power from renewable sources by 2010. The hallmark of the state's efforts is the California Solar Initiative (CSI), which aims to add 3,000 megawatts of new solar power by 2017. As part of the Go Solar California campaign, the CSI has provided over a decade of solar rebates to customers in California's investor-owned utility territories (PG&E, SCE and SDG&E).
