State-Sponsored Incentives for Residential & Commercial Solar

Compared to most states, Michigan has a strong history of enacting pro-renewables legislation. A few of their flagship programs have expired, but the state still offers some very helpful incentives. In addition to what's listed here, don't forget the 30-percent federal tax credit and accelerated depreciation rules available to residents and businesses that install a solar energy system.

Wisconsin Public Power, Inc. sponsors a pretty cool Renewable Energy Rebate program that offers a rebate of up to $10,000 for PV systems and $3500 for solar hot water systems owned by qualifying customers. 

DTE Energy's generous Solar Current Program offers a rebate of $2.40 per DC watt and a production incentive of $0.11 per kWh. 

For solar hot water heaters, an appliance rebate program offers 25% of the new system's cost up to $2500 per system.

Michigan also offers a net metering program for owners of renewable energy systems to sell their excess energy back to the local utility.

Finally, like many states, Michigan provides a 100% property tax exemption for renewable energy systems owned by commercial customers, which allows businesses to invest in new technologies without increasing their property tax liability.
