More about solar power in Kentucky
Support for solar energy in Kentucky got a boost in January 2009. It was then that the state instituted a tax credit for Kentucky residents and businesses who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or a solar thermal (solar hot water) system. Capped at $500 (or 30% of costs) for residential solar systems, the KY credit can go a long way in reducing the upfront costs of solar thermal systems, which are considerably more affordable than solar panels. The maximum incentive for commercial solar systems is $1,000. While the state tax credit won't dramatically defray the cost of a solar panel system ($500 is a drop in the bucket when you're talking about a system that could easily cost over $20,000), the federal renewable energy credit can. Worth up to 30 percent of installed costs, with no dollar-amount cap, the federal solar tax credit can literally save you thousands of dollars. (Note: for commercial solar energy systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses may receive a solar energy grant instead of, and equal to, the 30 percent tax credit. This option is made possible by the stimulus package that was passed in February, 2009.) Beyond this, Kentucky residents who install solar panels may participate in the TVA's Green Power Switch program. Under this arrangement, the TVA will purchase the electricity from your solar PV system at an above-retail rate, for a minimum of 10 years. This type of program -- called a production based incentive -- can dramatically improve the return on investment for your solar panel system.
