More about solar power in Montana

In Montana, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels can make a lot of sense in both grid-tied and off-the-grid arrangements. Grid-tied panels produce DC current, which is converted to AC current, which is in turn used to power appliances around the home. Any excess electricity is fed back into the grid and credited to your monthly utility account. Off-the-grid system, by contrast, are stand alone systems, and accordingly do not allow for net metering. What they do allow for, however, is providing cost-effective power solutions to isolated locations -- something Montana has plenty of. Off-the-grid systems make the most sense in those spots where it's difficult, or prohibitively expensive, to install utility poles. Solar-powered cattle waterers, for instance, are becoming increasingly popular among ranchers who need to make water available to far-flung herds.

Solar power in Montana is benefited by a $500 state tax credit, available to residents who install solar panels or a solar thermal (solar hot water) system. Montana residents and businesses may also participate in the Northwest Solar Cooperative (NWSC) Green Tags Purchase program. In practice, NWSC will purchase the electricity from your solar PV (or wind) system at a rate of $0.02/kWh (valid through the end of 2009). Beyond this, don't forget about the renewable energy tax credit available from the federal government. The credit is worth up to 30 percent of total installed system costs, and any excess credit may be carried forward to the subsequent tax year. What's more, for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses can opt to receive a solar energy grant instead of, and equal to, the tax credit. Taken together, federal and state programs can reduce considerably the cost of a solar energy system in Montana.
