More about solar power in New MexicoNew Mexico gets a ton of sun and its lawmakers have set up some pretty decent solar energy incentives. Individuals and business, for example, can take a tax credit worth 10 percent of the installed costs of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or a solar thermal (solar hot water) system. See the NM Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department for specifics. In addition, homeowners and businesses can take a production-based annual tax credit over the first 10 years after the solar energy system has been installed. Put simply: for each kWh of electricity produced by your solar power system, you get a tax credit of about $0.027. This might not sound like a lot, but over time these credits add up, providing additional savings over a sustained period (10 years). For more info on these New Mexico solar incentive programs, see the Clean Energy NM website. Finally, don't forget that the federal government provides a 30-percent tax credit for individuals and companies who install renewable energy systems. (Important note: for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses can opt to receive a solar energy grant -- still worth 30 percent of system costs -- instead of the tax credit.)
