More about solar energy in New YorkWhen it comes to promoting the adoption of solar power, New York is one of the country's leaders. The state provides a number of helpful solar incentive programs. A solar rebate, for instance, is available from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). As of February 3, 2009, NY homeowners who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels may receive $3.00/watt for the first 4 kW of solar capacity, and $2.00/watt for the next 4 kW (for a maximum system size of 8 kW). Businesses that install solar panels may receive $3.00/watt up to 40 kW of capacity, and $2.00/watt for the next 40 kW (for a maximum system size of 80 kW per site meter). To be eligible for the rebate, the system must be installed with a NYSERDA-certified installer. NYSERDA is the appropriate program for Con Edison customers. The bottom line is that the NYSERDA rebate program can significantly reduce the upfront costs associated with installing a solar panel system. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) also offers a rebate option, as well, called the Solar Pioneers program. Residential solar panels may receive $3.50/watt, while commercial systems can receive $1.00-$3.50 per watt, depending on the size of the system. Note that the rebate levels are liable to change, so for the most up-to-date info on these programs, visit the NYSERDA website or the LIPA website. Finally, the cost of installing a solar energy system in New York may be reduced further by the 30% federal renewable energy tax credit. (Important note: for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses can opt to receive a solar energy grant -- still worth 30 percent of system costs -- in place of the tax credit.) Depending on your monthly electricity usage and the orientation of your roof, solar power may be a good option for you.
