More about solar power in OregonIn Oregon, solar energy is increasingly viewed as a viable means of promoting a low-carbon economy. Not only have lawmakers succeeded in creating green jobs and attracting a number of high-profile solar manufacturers to the state. In recent years, Oregon has created a number of programs that help reduce the out-of-pocket cost of a solar energy system. You can read more about them on our Oregon solar incentive page, but here's a quick overview of the main solar programs. Homeowners who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels may take a personal tax credit worth $3.00/watt, for a maximum incentive of $6,000 ($1,500 per year, for four years). Solar thermal (solar hot water) systems are also eligible for a tax credit. See the Oregon Department of Energy for full details. OR-base usinesses that install a solar energy system -- and/or other eligible renewable energy technologies -- are permitted to take a state tax credit worth up to $10 million. Excess credit may be carried forward eight years, which means that installing a solar system can derive consistent tax savings over an extended timeframe. Again, see the Oregon Dept of Energy for more info. The other important state-sponsored solar initiative in Oregon is the Oregon Energy Trust rebate program. Beyond this, don't forget that the cost of installing a solar energy system may be reduced further by the 30% federal renewable energy tax credit, available to individuals and businesses. (Important note: for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses can opt to receive a solar energy grant -- still worth 30 percent of system costs -- instead of the tax credit.) Whether you're interested in solar panels in Portland, or a solar thermal (solar hot water) system in Salem, the installation professionals listed above are well equipped to meet your needs.
