More about solar power in South CarolinaRecently, South Carolina lawmakers have taken a small, yet symbolic, step toward promoting the adoption of solar power. SC now offers a 25-percent renewable energy tax credit. Businesses and homeowners who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or solar thermal (solar hot water) systems are eligible. Any excess credit may be carried for up to 10 years, which means that buyers can reap tax savings over a relatively long timeframe. In addition to the South Carolina solar tax credit, a 30% federal renewable energy tax credit further reduces out-of-pocket costs. And for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses may receive a renewable energy grant equal to (and instead of) the 30-percent federal tax credit. The renewable energy grant option has been made possible by the federal stimulus package that was passed in February 2009.
