So it makes sense that the state has instituted a number of programs that help lower the costs associated with installing a solar energy system. The VT Small-Scale Renewable Energy incentive program, for example, provides a $1.75/watt rebate to homeowners and businesses who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Customers of Green Mountain Power who install solar panels can participating in their production-based incentive program, which pays about six cents for each kWh produced by the owner's panels. In addition, Vermont provides a 30-percent corporate tax credit to businesses that install solar PV panels and other types of solar technologies. Finally, don't forget about the 30-percent renewable energy tax credit from the federal government. The federal credit applies to both homeowners and companies. And for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses may receive a renewable energy grant equal to (and instead of) the 30-percent tax credit.
