More about solar power in VirginiaIn April 2009, Virginia announced plans to provide a solar rebate to individuals and businesses who install solar energy systems. At the time of writing, details were not available on the $39 million energy bill. Check in with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy for updates and details. Beyond this forthcoming state-sponsored program, Virginia residents and businesses who install solar panels may participate in the TVA's Green Power Switch program. Under this arrangement, the TVA will purchase the electricity from your solar PV system at an above-retail rate, for a minimum of 10 years. This type of program -- called a production based incentive -- can dramatically improve the return on investment for your solar panel system. Finally, don't forget about the 30-percent renewable energy tax credit from the federal government, available to homeowners and businesses in Virginia and throughout the country. Important note: for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses may receive a renewable energy grant equal to (and instead of) the 30-percent tax credit. The renewable energy grant option has been made possible by the federal stimulus package that was passed in February 2009.
